The importance of cinema and its role in society

Why do we need cinema? From that question Dr. Fatima Ghandour set out on a journey through the history of the moving image and its part in shaping collective awareness and keeping the memory of cities and people.
She dwelt on Libya’s own story with cinema theaters, from the years when they were full to the long interruption, and saw in the return of shared screenings a first step toward an audience that watches, debates and disagrees.
Cinema is not a luxury. It is how a society looks at itself.

Lecturer in the Visual Arts department, Faculty of Arts and Media, University of Tripoli. She writes about film screenings and presents the radio program Maa Al Cinema.
